It seems only appropriate that, on the first day of 2017 we were driving along the old Highway 66 just east of the ghost town of Amboy and we came across a pair of marble lions (also known as "foo dogs" keeping watch over the Mojave. They were about a quarter mile apart from one another, just off the highway. At the base of each was a new ziploc bag holding a pen and notebook. Travelers had jotted notes, thoughts, wishes into the books. I was fascinated by these random statues, in the middle of nowhere. With some help from the Google, I came across this article in Elephant Journal. It was a great read, for me, on the first of the year. I hope you might find this of interest as well.
